New Class Coming Soon!
We are excited to announce the start of a new class offered by the Seikukan Martial Arts family. Sensei Darlene will be offering classes in Urbanna on Thursdays, from 5:30-6:30, starting on April 10, 2025. Seikukan Martial Arts is partnering with the Middlesex Women’s Club to offer this opportunity at 210 Virginia St, Urbanna, VA 23175.

This class will be open hand only, focusing on kihon (basics) and kata. For those students who are yellow belt or higher, they will also need to attend some classes at the Hombu in Hayes so that they may train with weapons and sparring in order to progress. Classes are currently for all ages and ranks. If attendance consistently grows, we are open to adding a second class the same evening.
As this is an extension of classes offered at the Hombu, we are pleased to provide these classes under the same pricing and attendance structure.
Looking Back on 2024 and Looking Ahead to 2025

2024 was a busy year at Seikukan Martial Arts!
We have grown, welcoming new students who are excited to begin their martial arts journey and promoted 7 black belts, recognizing their excellence and continued growth.
It is always exciting to add new members and watch them grow alongside their new mentors and dojo family.
The Seikukan Thunder Competition Team participated in the AAU Invitational in November 2024. They did an amazing job, bringing home 2 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals! This was an intense competition and we had 3 first time competitors!
The Thunder didn’t stop there. Starting the new year out strong, 2 competitors went to the AAU Virginia State Championships, hosted by Sensei Moose of Axsom Martial Arts in Newport News Virginia in February. They brought home 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal. They’re back in the dojo already and gearing up for Summer open tournaments!
Somewhere in all of the classes, training, grueling tests, and an insane number of snow days, we also found time to party! Our dojo Halloween and Christmas Parties are always a great time, and this year was no exception. We filled the Hombu with fun, laughter, and silliness to celebrate the holidays and Dojo family.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Halloween on Howard Street fundraiser. We raised about $200 for the dojo to help with competition fees, dojo supplies, and equipment.
Keep an eye out for Halloween 2025 to see how you can help!
Looking forward to a fantastic 2025!

AAU Virginia State Championship Results

The Seikukan Thunder Competition Team participated in this year’s AAU Virginia State Championships, hosted by Sensei Moose of Axsom Martial Arts in Newport News Virginia. The competition had a great turn out of over 250 competitors. Seikukan Martial Arts was represented by 12 students, with one of our newest black belts – Sensei Leslie – making her competition debut.
Our Team did a fantastic job and everyone brought their absolute best. We consistently have the most well-mannered and respectful students and that is better than any number of medals we ever bring home.
But, I know you all are wondering how we did. So without further ado…

The Thunder came home with a total of 28 medals! Including the Archer family’s Bronze medal in Team and Family Kata. We are looking forward to attending an open tournament in late March.
If you’re interested in learning more about our competition team, send an email to seikukan.hombu@gmail.com.
See you at the dojo!

New Classes, New Year
We’re very excited to start off the new year by offering our new Little Ninjas classes for 5 to 7 year olds. The class will be offered at both the Oniisan and Musuko Dojos! Oniisan Dojo, at the WISC in Williamsburg, will offer the class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 5:45. Musuko Dojo, at the Zanshin Martial Arts Center in Hayes, will offer the class on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 9:45.

This is a new curriculum, and we can’t wait to try it out. Learn all about the class, including how it directly relates to your child’s natural development, on our Little Ninjas page.
Not only will be we offering a new class, we are also getting new mats for our Oniisan Dojo! We are not sure the exact date yet, but it should be early to mid-January. A big thank you to everyone who helped raise money for the mats. If you are interested in helping with future fundraising efforts, please email us at seikukan.hombu@gmail.com.

Parents Take the Mat!
In a fascinating turn of events, the parents took over the mats on a recent Tuesday night. Warmups didn’t stop them. Kicks and punches were executed with conviction. Kata didn’t even deter them. Their children were shocked, and impressed, at the sudden confidence and skill the parents showed.

Is this a new trend? Will we see more parents kicking off their shoes and donning gi as they venture onto the mat? We sure hope so!
Watch out kids, there’s new karateka in town!

Thank you to all of the parents and students who participated in our Christmas Cookie Class, December 14th. A great time was had by all, maybe a few sore muscles, and way too many cookies. We hope you had as much fun as we did and have a very Merry Christmas.

Bull Moose Competition Results
The Seikukan Thunder Competition Team did an outstanding job at the recent Bull Moose Invitational Tournament on November 6th, in Newport News, VA. There was a lot of great competition from all over the US and it was nice to have such a variety of competitors.
We took a total of 12 competitors: 8 kids and 4 adults, accompanied by Sensei Josh Beadle and Kyoshi Chuck Beadle. The kids earned an impressive 7 Gold, 9 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals. The adults brought home 8 Gold and 4 Silver medals.
Two of our families competed in the new Team Kata division. The Duffy family brought home silver and the Archer family came home with the gold. We’re very proud of both families and hope to see them in the ring at Nationals this summer.

Our competitors were respectful, polite, and humble. The medal hanging around their neck, as fun and awesome as that is, shows nothing of the growth that these karate-ka undergo every time they step into that ring. Regardless of the prize earned, they all came away successful because they were at their best – both in the ring and out.
